Shetland Rugby October Update

October has seen a mixed bag as far as the team results go. Starting with the men’s team, two wins and one loss but all the bonus points have seen them move to the top of the league table. The women’s team have also seen success this month with a draw and a win at home! The rugby club have also confirmed that it’s gearing up for a great year of fundraising, with the exciting news that the under 15/16 boys/girls teams are bon voyage to the Versailles Sevens tournament. Keep an eye out on our social media and local media for fundraising events!

With the news that Wasps winger Christian Wade is to make the move from rugby union to the NFL in America, we decided to catch up with some of our players who have come to us from other sports. As a club we have many netballers, hockey players, footballers, even golfers who have made the move to rugby. We caught up with one of the senior women’s newest players Charis Scott.

Tell us a bit about yourself- Hi my names Charis Scott, born in Glasgow but raised in Dumfries. My previous sport was football. I played football for a team since i was 10. I stopped playing for my team due to injury at 14. I returned to club level when I started at university, playing for Dumfries girls/ Queen of the South. This also involved an opportunity to trial for West of Scotland, I didn’t make it but ended up playing for the south west of Scotland school team.
I recently moved to Shetland and heard about the senior womens team and that they were recruiting so thought I would give it a go. I felt I could transfer a lot of my football skills across to rugby, such as footwork when side stepping players. I definitely feel that it’s a benefit being a multi sport player.
Tell us your rugby story- I still enjoy football but have really enjoyed the transition across to another sport. Rugby so far has been great fun and really friendly, you’re really made to feel a part of the team. I would recommend anyone thinking about a new sport or taking up a second sport to come have a go!
Just for fun, favourite football and rugby teams? Football team has to be Manchester United and rugby? Scotland, I don’t know any of the clubs yet!

As always, Shetland Rugby Club welcomes new and old players any age and fitness level. Please check our website www.shetlandrugby.co.uk or our facebook page @ShetlandRFC for the juniors through to seniors training times and days.
