With the Junior sections expanding more coaching staff is needed to help out

The next generation is key! To progress as a club we not only are focusing on our senior teams but the juniors as well. Behind the scenes the junior coaching staff have been doing an amazing job and as a result the clubs youth sections are growing ever bigger.

We are now asking the Shetland community for assistance.

Are you interested in helping out with coaching next season for our Junior Section (Primary and Secondary ages)? If you are, there are three different options for you. Parent Helper, Coaching Assistant, or Coach.

Parent Helpers are there to provide help and assistance to the coach. For example in setting up activities, helping with equipment, etc. The role varies depending on the age group. Parent Helpers need to be PVG checked but are not coaches so don’t need any coaching training. This is a good start point if you are not sure but there might be limits on the number of Parent Helpers for a group.

Coaching Assistants also need to be PVG checked but also must have successfully completed the online RugbyRight course. A Coaching Assistant works with the Coach to deliver the content of the session. They are more involved in the training and interact with the kids more but are led by the Coach.

A Coach needs to be PVG checked, have successfully completed the online RugbyRight course, and gained a UKCC Level 1 or 2 course. These are 2-3 day courses covering practical and theory for coaching rugby. Courses can be run in Shetland if there are enough people interested. As a Coach, you will take a more active role in coaching the sessions.

If you are interested in becoming a coach for the Club, please can you get in touch or message Richard Shelmerdine with answers to the following questions:

What coaching level would you be happy with (Parent Helper, Coaching Assistant, Coach)?
Do you have a preference for a specific age group (specific Primary or Secondary years)?
Are there any groups you do not want to work with?

If you have any questions, please send us a message or let one of the coaches know. Some of the coaches will also be down at Tartan Touch on Friday evenings if you would prefer to speak about it. PVG checks and course will all be arrange though the club.

This is a very exciting time at Shetland Rugby with all areas of the club expanding. It will be these generations that benefit from the work we area doing now. We look forward to having anyone come aboard that wishes the be part of our rapidly developing club.
